Kelly Guffey Memorial Nursing Career Scholarship
Kelly Diane Guffey was a 1991 graduate of North Gaston High School in Dallas, NC.
She continued her education at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and
graduated in 1995 with a degree in Biology. After extensive travel and work abroad,
Kelly taught school for 3 years. During her tenure as a teacher she was diagnosed with
carcinoid cancer, a rare disease with no cure.
Realizing her life long ambition of being a nurse, Kelly entered Mercy School of Nursing
in Charlotte in October 2003. While undergoing extensive operations and exhausting treatments,
she never gave in to her illness. She never lost hope and lived her life purposefully and
hopefully and successfully met her goal. Kelly graduated from nursing school and received
her licensure as a registered nurse in July 2005. She worked as a pediatric nurse for
Carolinas Medical Center and after 3 short months of employment, Kelly died on January 11, 2006
at the age of 32.
Kelly embraced her profession and worked diligently to be the very best care provider her patients
could have. Her dedication was unmatched, her enthusiasm was undaunted and her potential for greatness
had no limit. Only Kelly’s untimely death ended the many contributions she would have made to the
nursing profession.
Remember Kelly, Inc. was established to provide an opportunity for her legacy to continue through
the dedication of future nursing students. An annual $1000 scholarship will be available to assist a
young male or female graduate of North Gaston High School interested in a career in nursing.
